A Federal Superior Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced the popular Tiktoker, Babatunde Peter Olaitan, also known as Teee Dollar, and a Olamida Tobilola, also known as an urge, six months in prison for abusing Naira, the Nigerian currency.
Judge Alexander Owoeye issued the sentence on Thursday, May 8, 2025, after the duo declared himself guilty of separating the charges of a single content to alter Naira's notes during a social event held in 23 Macdonald Road, Ikoyi, on April 8, 2025.
The Zonal Directorate of Lagos 1 of the Commission of Economic and Financial Crimes (EFCC) assured the conviction after an investigation led by intelligence that tracked a viral Tiktok video that shows the convicts who spray N200 notes while they dance.
According to the EFCC, the video, which circulated widely through Tiktok, triggered the agency's investigation into the incident.
“After the approval of the intelligence by the zonal director, a investigation letter was sent to the accused, asking him to make a statement about the video,” testified Ibrahim Bukar, a commission investigation officer.
The position against Olaitan said: “That you, Babatunde Peter Olaitan, on April 8, 2025 … He manipulated the funds in the denomination of N200 issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria when spraying it, and you committed an opposite crime and punishable under section 21 (1) of the Law of the Central Bank of 2007”.
A position similar to Olamide was read, and both people admitted guilt during the reading of charges.
Judge Owoeye condemned and sentenced the accused to six months in prison each, with a fine option, underlining the renewed repression of the government against the abuse of Naira.
The EFCC has constantly warned of the spray and mutilation of the Naira, stating that such actions not only violate the law of the Central Bank but also undermine the integrity of the national currency.
In April, the controversial influencer Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, was sentenced to six months in prison for similar acts of abuse of Naira.
Similarly, billionaire businessman Emeka Okonkwo (E-Money) was arrested last month to allegedly sprinkle Naira and US dollars in public events.
The celebrities, including actress Iyabo Eye and comedian Ayo Makun (Ay) were also recently invited by the EFCC on viral videos that show them or their guests spraying effective in social functions.
