A prison inmate in the Nigerian correctional center, Okere in Warri, State of Delta has died.
The inmate identified when David died while receiving treatment at the Central Hospital, Warri.
Attached of the prisons, DCP Richard Egbede confirmed the report on Sunday morning, in a telephone interview with our reporter in Warri.
Comptroller Egbede said against reports on social networks: “The inmate who died was HIV positive and had refused to take his drugs.”
DCP EGBEDE dismissed the claims of social networks that suggested negligence on the part of the prison authorities, insisting that the custody service provided constant medical support in the disease of the late inmate.
Narrating the medical history and how the inmate died, DPC Egbede said: “We have been giving drugs all the time, but he will only keep the drugs. He was not taking them.”
“Then, when the thing completely exploded about a month ago, we took him to the Central Hospital, Warri here. They took care of him.
“After 2 or 3 days of admission, he was discharged and we brought him back. Then we advised him, please take his drugs.
“Before he died, he developed a little light fever. I stopped in prison until around 8 pm at night, when we drip him and we thank God for the members of his cell. Its members of the cell are so cooperative. They even donated money before leaving,
They said “Oga if you don’t receive money, I take. I said no! There is money in my hand. They donated money to take him to the hospital.”
According to him, “last week on Sunday, before this happened, it started around 2 at night and there was nothing we could do at night.
“Then, in the morning I had to ask them to call my doctors. They took him to the Central Hospital. It was at the Central Hospital and began to shake. The doctor put him in oxygen, did a test. Before the result came out, the cold hands of death picked him up.
“I don’t know what the media say. Let me know, if the child is alive, he will tell you that Oga took care of me.”
The Nigerian correctional service has not yet published an official statement beyond the confirmation provided by the attached comptroller.
