The tragedy attacked Wednesday in Nwanwu Junction, a local government area of Abakaliki of the state of Ebonyi, since a concrete mixer allegedly suffered a brake failure and got into the stores on the road, killing three people and leaving four other critical wounds.
According to an eyewitness, Miss Blessing Nkwegu, the truck, belonging to a construction company, was descending to Oku Amachi Road from Nwezenyi when she lost control when trying to avoid colliding with a motorcycle.
In the process, he deviated from the road, crushing stores and passersby.
The stores belonging to DJ Ogobest and two food vendors were completely destroyed, while nearby companies and properties suffered various degrees of damage.
Speaking about the incident, the executive president of the Local Government of Abakaliki, Hon. Ebere Nwogba, expressed a deep sympathy, describing tragedy as a heartbreaking and a great loss for the community.
He extended condolences to the afflicted families and prayed for the rapid recovery of the injured.
“This is a sad day for the people of Amachi and the entire LGA of Abakaliki. We cried with the families that lost their loved ones and assure them that each possible step will be taken to prevent such tragedy from happening again,” said Nwogba.
The president also urged residents to keep calm, ensuring that the law enforcement agencies were already investigating the cause of the accident.
Also called the motorists and the road users to have caution, obey the traffic rules and avoid speeding, especially in densely populated areas.
It was confirmed that the remains of the three deceased victims were deposited in a morgue, while the injured receive medical treatment.
