One Mr. Joseph Emmanuel, 24, of 3 Esit Ebom Street, Calabar, beat his 10-year-old daughter to death.
According to reports, the deceased boy had lost his father’s fuel tube, which he often used to transfer fuel to his commercial motorcycle.
In Wednesday’s incident, neighbors almost attacked the young man out of anger.
Reports said that a neighbor was about to lynch him when one Okon Edwin of 5 Ekeng Ewa Street, Calabar South, quickly alerted the police.
Upon receiving the report, police officers mobilized to the scene and rescued the suspect from the action of the mob.
According to Police PRO, Sunday Akata, the suspect was found with visible injuries inflicted by the youths and was subsequently detained.
Akata confirmed that the suspect confessed to the act and said he killed his daughter out of provocation.
The suspect was later transferred to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UNICAL) for medical attention while the deceased child was examined and the body deposited at the mortuary of the same hospital for preservation and autopsy.
Akata said the investigation into the incident has begun and the suspect could be charged to court soon pending the outcome of the investigation.
