A man identified as Sodiq Oyewummi has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for stealing electrical cables from the OKE-AFA Waste Treatment Plant, a key installation under the wastewater management office of the state of Lagos, LSWMO.
Oyewummi was caught in the act by alert officials from the plant while trying to eliminate the electrical cables from the government owned by the government. He was immediately delivered to the Court of Special Crimes and Special Crimes of the Work Group of the State of Lagos for prosecution.
It was prosecuted for a position of three positions, which included a conduct that probably caused a violation of peace, intentional damage to the property of the government and the theft of government property. Oyewummi declared himself guilty of the first and third count and was convicted accordingly.
When commenting on the incident, AGR Adefemi Afolabi, general manager of LSWMO, declared the severity of the crime and the rapid judicial response.
“This conviction reinforces the zero tolerance policy of the State Government of Lagos on public infrastructure vandalism,” said EngNo.
He also noted that rapid legal action should serve as a deterrent element for others and reaffirmed the resolution of the agency to safeguard the public infrastructure.
“LSWMO remains firm in its commitment to monitor and maintain the state's wastewater treatment facilities to ensure that they operate optimally and serve the public effectively,” he said.
The State of the State of the State of Lagos urged the members of the public to remain attentive and inform any suspicious activity around the critical infrastructure.
