A superior court sitting in the state of Plateau condemned Emmanuel Ude, a former student of the Government Technical College, Bukuru, to death hanging for the murder of his teacher, Mr. Job Dashe, in 2021.
The sentence, pronounced by Judge Silas Bakfur on Monday, followed a prolonged trial in which Ude was convicted of guilty homicide, a crime under sections 221 and 222 of the Criminal Code of the State of Plateau that entails the death penalty.
The incident occurred in July 2021, while you was still a student at the Technical School located in the local government of Jos South.
According to judicial procedures, during a routine inspection in the school dining room, Mr. Dashe, since the service teacher asked you to open your food bottle, suspecting that you had violated school food regulations. You refused and left the hall.
Shortly after, he returned from the bedroom with a knife and stabbed the teacher in the chest before fleeing the scene. Mr. Dashe was urgently taken to a nearby hospital along Vom Road, where he was later declared dead.
Ude was arrested by the police days later. The investigators of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said that he confessed the crime, and his statement became a key evidence during the trial.
Nansil Mbah and Solomon Deme prosecutors of the Ministry of Justice of the State of Plateau argued that the attack was deliberate and premeditated. They presented their case for almost four years before the Court.
Ude's lawyer, Josil Drinkat, begged for clemency, citing his client's remorse. However, Judge Bakfur said the law must continue its course.
“The Prosecutor's Office has demonstrated its case beyond reasonable doubt. The hands of the court are tied; I can only do what the law prescribes in such a situation,” the judge ruled.
