A gas explosion on Sunday leveled a section of the Orisunmibare market, on Baale Street in the Orile-Iganmu area of Lagos State, destroying several shops.
The fire, which did not claim any lives, broke out at around 2:13 pm, destroying goods worth several million naira and causing traders and residents to flee for safety.
The explosion was said to have originated from a gas retail store that reportedly housed several cylinders of different sizes.
The Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, confirming the incident, said officers responded promptly and brought the situation under control.
“No lives were lost except for one person who suffered a minor hand injury,” he said.
In another development, a fire team responded to an accident involving a 33,000 liter petrol tanker along the Apapa-Oshodi Highway near Berger Car Depot.
The tanker reportedly spilled its contents after colliding with a Mercedes-Benz jeep and seven other stationary vehicles displayed for sale.
“The prompt intervention of the Ajegunle and Ijegun-Egba fire crews prevented the spill from becoming another disaster. The remaining fuel was safely transferred to another tanker, while the recovery of the damaged vehicles continues,” Adeseye said.
