A 28-year-old Cameroonian, Ondigui Nnomo Germain, was found on Tuesday in Osogbo, Osun State, after fleeing from people he believed intended to harm him.
Germain ran towards the Osun Amotekun Corps headquarters in the Powerline area of the state capital around 11am, seeking protection from his pursuers.
He revealed to security agency personnel that he had been brought to Nigeria from the Ahala Barriere area of Yaounde by a Nigerian who promised to get him a job.
Germain said he sold some of his belongings to raise money for the trip after the man insisted he needed to contribute financially before traveling.
According to him, “suspicions started growing after the man who brought me along with some associates visited me at a hotel along Osogbo/Ikirun road on Monday.”
He said he became alarmed when he noticed unusual behavior and felt the job offer he was presented with might not have been genuine.
“When I noticed that the man who brought me had guys everywhere on the road, even at the border, I got scared,” he said.
Germain explained that he was taken to a hotel room where several men tried to convince him about the supposed job.
“I noticed it was like a voodoo circle, everyone had rings except the man who brought me,” he added.
Realizing the danger, he said he quietly left the hotel, but the men chased him in a vehicle as he fled through the streets of Osogbo.
After escaping, Germain spent the night in an abandoned building before finding his way to the door of Amotekun’s office in the early hours of Tuesday.
Speaking through a language translator on a mobile phone, he said: “I sold my belongings and gave him the money he asked for. We arrived in Nigeria three days ago. When they took me to the interview, I saw many people in the room and suspected something was wrong.”
Germain told Amotekun officials that his greatest wish was to return safely to Cameroon.
“If you can accompany me to the border through Buea because I have noticed that there are people on the road, I will reach Cameroon. I am afraid I will not be safe again,” he said.
Responding to the development, the Public Relations Officer of Osun State Police Command, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, recommended that the matter be raised at the nearest police station.
Newslodge learned that Amotekun personnel escorted Germain to the Obelawo Police Post where he formally reported his ordeal to the police authorities.
