Four people were injured on Tuesday afternoon after a building collapsed in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
At press time, two people remain missing. The building, which was under construction, suddenly collapsed while many construction workers were inside.
Located at the popular Cathedral Junction, next to the former All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat along Oyemekun Road, the building had been under construction for the past six months. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m.
After the collapse, passersby and sympathizers came to the scene to help rescue those trapped under the rubble. Apparently, shortly after the incident, members of the Federal Fire Service arrived.
According to sources, some workers who suffered injuries of varying degrees were rushed to the hospital and immediately treated by medical personnel.
Sources also confirmed that two workers remain missing.
A witness, who identified himself as Dapo, said: “I was cycling along Cathedral Junction when I suddenly heard a loud noise. Looking back, my passenger and I saw a large crowd running towards the area.
“I helped people at the scene rescue some of those trapped in the collapse. They are workers at the scene and were seriously injured.”
The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Sunday Olajide, who rushed to the scene, said an investigation would be launched to determine the immediate and long-term causes of the incident.
Meanwhile, the state government closed the site and promised to take further action based on the outcome of the investigation.
