Two pedestrians were injured following a road accident involving a heavy truck carrying Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and a private vehicle at the Apakun Bridge, Oshodi hinterland, Lagos State.
The incident occurred at the top of the bridge when the truck reportedly collided with a moving silver Toyota Corolla, causing a chain reaction that led to pedestrians being run over.
According to preliminary reports, the truck, with license plate EKY 120 YK, was allegedly traveling at excessive speed before colliding with the Toyota Corolla, EKY 289 HM, in the strategic Apakun Bridge corridor.
Authorities said the impact caused serious disruption to traffic flow in the area and posed a significant danger to other road users. Following the collision, two pedestrians were injured, while the driver of the Toyota Corolla suffered serious injuries.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that its officers quickly mobilized to the scene and carried out a coordinated rescue operation.
“LASTMA officers quickly arrived at the scene and successfully rescued the injured victims from the rubble,” the agency said.
“The affected pedestrians and the injured driver were immediately transported to a nearby medical center, where they are currently receiving medical attention.”
Operatives from the Ajao State Police Division provided security support to ensure safety and prevent further incidents during the rescue and evacuation process.
Due to the highly flammable nature of the truck cargo, personnel from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service also rushed to the scene as a precautionary measure.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transport, Sola Giwa, condemned what he described as the growing trend of reckless speeding by truck and tanker operators across the state.
Giwa warned that the Lagos State Government would no longer tolerate driving practices that endanger lives, stressing that violators would face the full wrath of the law.
He urged articulated vehicle operators to strictly adhere to speed limits and traffic rules, while praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.
