A 57-year-old man suspected of having been infected with COVID-19 in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, has tested negative.

Dr. Mohammed Lawan Gana, the State Health Commissioner, who revealed this at a press conference in Damaturu, said the male patient came from California in the United States of America 17 days ago.

According to Dr. Gana, the specimen from the suspected case was brought to Abuja, but the results of the preliminary and subsequent tests were negative, allaying fears of the virus in Damaturu.

He noted that the patient has been discharged after certification by medical tests that he is negative for the virus.

The commissioner noted that the ministry deemed it necessary to hold a press conference to inform the general public not to panic, and said there is no case of the virus in Damaturu.

However, he asked residents to maintain basic hygiene both inside and outside their immediate environment as part of preventive measures against viruses and other diseases.

The commissioner emphasized that the state government and development partners operating in the state will continue to train and train health workers on COVID-19 and other epidemic-prone diseases.
