Already at 6 in the morning of last Saturday, the prestigious Ikeja Golf Club in Lagos had begun to receive golfers, with kits in tow, arriving in the form of drops. After about half an hour, the drips turned into thick streams of golfers and their caddies.

The occasion was the inaugural edition of DStv Premium Golf Day, sponsored by the leading provider of pay television services, DStv.

Golf enthusiasts flocked to see which of the 99 golfers would win the prizes on offer. The 99 had been selected from a total of 500 registrants in accordance with the physical distancing requirements of COVID-19 security measures.

DStv Golf Day followed the stroke play format, which sees the number of strokes by each golfer counted in two rounds of 18 holes – the first nine holes and the back nine holes, with the golfer with the best overall score of the 18 holes to be announced the winner.

The first game started around 6.45am, with the golfers taking turns on the club’s lush green field.

For many golfers, hopes of posting outstanding performances began to fade after the first nine holes when they realized that their performances weren’t the kind that would earn them any of the awards. Some quit, while others continued into the final nine in hopes of regaining their scores.

After a day of exertion on the golf course, the golfers took a break and reconvened for the scheduled cocktail party, where the results would be announced and prizes awarded to the winners.

The cocktail, presented by Mr. Omini Ofem, was highly anticipated by the announcement of the winners. The star award, a business class ticket for a weekend stay at a five-star hotel in Dubai, was won by Dr. Ogunbiyi Ogunbanjo with a net score of 65.

Mr. Remi Olukoya, with a net score of 67, came in second place and was rewarded with a business class ticket and a weekend accommodation in a five-star hotel in Rwanda. Next to him was Mr. Rasheed Adebisi, with a net score of 69. He was rewarded with a weekend accommodation in a five-star hotel in Lagos.

Ms. Linda Obieze won the female category with the same score and was rewarded with a golf bag.

The longest trip award was claimed by Mr. Femi Ajala, who won a 55-inch television. Mr. Ife Muritala, the son of a golfer, took the prize – a golf bag – to the one closest to the pin (hole 17).

Offem noted that DStv Golf Day attracted golfers from other clubs such as Ikoyi Club (golf section), Ibadan Golf Club, Abeokuta Golf Club, Benin Club (golf section) and Ekiti Golf Club.

Speaking at the cocktail party, Ikeja Golf Club captain, Mr. Oladimeji Durojaiye, said that Ikeja Golf Club members were delighted that the club was chosen by the sponsors. He also noted that the golfers were very excited.

“We thank the DStv team for bringing this initiative to Ikeja Golf Club. This is the first tournament and the feedback from the players has been very impressive. We sincerely hope that this becomes an annual event, ”he said.

Tope Oshunkeye, Marketing Director of MultiChoice Nigeria, representing John Ugbe, CEO of MultiChoice Nigeria, said that DStv is happy to be associated with the event and is a way of showing appreciation to subscribers of the DStv Premium package.

In their comments, Jenkins Alumona, CEO of Flykite Productions, the organizers of the event, thanked the golfers for their participation and expressed their hope that the event will take place at other golf clubs in Lagos and other cities.
