A farmer identified as Magaji Mai’aya has been reported dead and several others, including a police officer, injured in a clash between farmers and herdsmen in Yelwan Musari village, Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
A witness, Ado Musa, told Newslodge that armed herdsmen attacked the village between Saturday and Sunday morning, setting fire to houses and local rice milling factories. He said the fight broke out after months of tension following the killing of another farmer, Ya’u Namara, by herdsmen last year.
According to him, “herdsmen blocked the Guri-Hadejia road, preventing residents from transporting the injured victims to Hadejia hospital for treatment after the incident.”
He added that security agents arrived late at the scene and could not prevent the escalation, since both groups had been violent since Saturday afternoon.
It is not yet clear whether the herders were injured or killed in the clash. Musa noted that tensions had persisted for months, particularly after herdsmen boycotted local markets.
State police spokesperson Lawan Adam could not immediately be reached for comment at the time of filing this report.
