On Monday, drivers and people taking buses got stuck on the busy road from Mararaba to Abuja. Heavy rain had caused flooding, leading to a big traffic jam.
The flooding happened at a part of the road in New Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa State. The rain began early on Monday and the water soon overflowed the bad drainage system, turning the road into a mess.
Many cars got stuck in the water, and drivers found it hard to move through. This made the traffic even worse.
People living there and those traveling for work had to wait for hours to get a bus because of the traffic jam.
Mr. Peter Obi, a local resident, mentioned that some bus drivers started charging more money because of the situation. He said, “Every time it rains, we have this problem. The drains can’t hold the water, and this causes flooding and traffic jams. Now, bus drivers are hiking fares, making it even harder for us. The government needs to fix this.”
Another traveler, Vincent Okonkwo, said, “When it’s not raining, I spend about N1,000 to get from my home in Ado to my office in Wuse Zone 2. Today, because of the rain, it’s costing me N2,000. The traffic is heavy, and I am not sure when I will reach my office.”
Miss Blessing Ani, who lives in Masaka and works in Berger, also shared her experience. “Normally, it costs me N1,000 to get to my office. Today, due to the rain, I paid N2,200. This is very worrying because things are already hard in our country. Sometimes, I can’t even go to work because bus fares go up when it rains,” she said.
She asked the local government, Nasarawa State, and the FCT Administration to help the people living and traveling in the area. She also requested the Young Shall Grow Transportation Company, whose area is most affected by the flooding, to take some steps to help until the authorities find a long-term solution.
