Sad news from Jigawa State: A big flood has taken 28 lives and made over 6,000 families leave their homes. Dr. Haruna Mairiga, who works for the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), shared this in a talk with reporters.
Dr. Mairiga said that four neighborhoods, Auyo, Buji, Jahun, and Miga, have been hit very hard by the flood.
He mentioned that, because of the flood, government offices can’t do their work as usual. The water has made it impossible to reach their buildings.
Dr. Mairiga said 13 neighborhoods are affected by the flood. This has made the state set up over 20 places for people to stay, called Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. Many people are living in primary schools now, while some are staying with family and friends.
“We have counted over 5,000 people staying in these camps, not including newborn babies,” Dr. Mairiga said. Some areas have up to three camps because of how bad the flood is.
To help those staying in the camps, the government has given important supplies like clean water, toilets, and mosquito nets. This is to make sure everyone stays healthy and safe.
