Two people have been confirmed dead following a clash between farmers and herdsmen in Unguwar Dambo village, Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Residents said the incident occurred on Thursday after a dispute over grazing rights.
A witness, Alhaji Faruku, said the conflict began when some herders reportedly warned farmers to harvest their crops, claiming they would pass through the farmlands with their livestock.
“The farmers ignored the warning and headed to their farms as usual. Later, the herdsmen attacked them and killed a farmer identified as Malam Sule,” he said.
The killing reportedly triggered a retaliatory attack by farmers, resulting in the death of a herdsman, whose identity was yet to be confirmed as of press time.
Faruku, who said he lost his wife’s elder brother in the incident, called on authorities to intervene and end the recurring clashes between farmers and herders in the area.
“The problem is not new. Traditional rulers are aware of it. We hope for justice for the victim and lasting peace in our community,” he added.
Efforts to get a reaction from the Kebbi State Police Command were unsuccessful as messages sent to the command for confirmation were yet to be responded to at the time of filing this report.
